Nerja is one of the most beautiful small towns in Spain. From the beginning, Nerja was a small fishing village, which eventually expanded into a small town with about 21,000 inhabitants. The city has managed to retain its traditional charm withpainted houses decorated with beautiful iron details. In the "old town" you find many narrow alleys, many without traffic, while all the modern facilities you wish for are available. There are about 300 restaurants and tapas bars in town and of course, paella is one of the dishes offered on the menu.
Nerja was initially called Narixa, which in Arabic means a source or abundance of water, and here in the area there are several natural sources and rivers. The Nerja area is green and lush all year long. The scenery is beautiful and dramatic and offers many beautiful views with high mountains and deep valleys. With about 320 days of sunshine a year and high mountains that protect the area from cold and heat, the climate feels like summer all year round for people from northern Europe and therefore it is a popular area all around the year. The area around Nerja is located in Europe's only sub-tropical plantation zone. Farmers in the area grow most tropical fruits like mango, avacado, chirimoya, but there is also a lot of citrus fruits and almond trees. In the winter they also grow ordinary vegetables as well as strawberries. The National Park Sierra Almijara, Tejeda and Alhama with many high mountain peaks surrounding Nerja and some of them get snow occasionally during the winter. It is also close to the Sierra Nevada National Park, where you can ski on the altitude of 2.100 - 4.300 meters about 5-6 months a year.
Balcón de Europa is Nerja's most famous landmark and a central place for the city's activities. A walk along the Balcón de Europa offers spectacular panoramic views across the coastline. There are twelve beaches located within or near Nerja and the resort have some of the most beautiful beaches on Costa del Sol. You find everything from small cozy bathing bays to big sandy beaches with water sports like Playa Burriana, or the beautiful Playa de Maro beach that voted 2013 as the best in Andalucia and the 2nd best in Spain! Crystal clear waters and unbeatable landscapes make the beach in Maro a
favorite for many. A wonderful and beautiful excursion is to paddle sea kayak between Burriana beach in Nerja to Maro. There are many hidden little bays, turquoise bathing water, caves and waterfalls. In a Spanish television program, it was concluded that "Paradise exists and it is here in Andalusia."
One of the most popular sights in the area are the beautiful caves just outside of Nerja. They were discovered in 1959 by some boys from the village. Archaeological studies have shown that the caves are very old and they have been settlement for people up to about 15-25,000 years ago, but there are even older remains of people about 40,000 years old, making the caves one of the oldest boblats discovered. All around the year it is around 20 degrees in the caves. We really recommend a visit!

Here you will find, among other things, Nerja's diving center with Swedish-speaking staff, where boat trips, diving lessons, kayak rentals, canoeing and snorkelling are offered.
Burriana also has some of the best bars in Nerja and the paella served here has received a lot of attention in the area.
Hiking;
For those seeking tranquility, we recommend a walk in the stunning village of Maro, known for its pleasant hiking trails. If you want a real adventure, we recommend a hike to the mountain peak "Pico del cielo" (sky peak), or a walk up the river Rio Chillar that leads you to fantastic waterfalls!

Only 120 km from Nerja you will find the famous ski resort Sierra Nevada, which is open between December and April!
